Running is hard. It’s hard on the body, particularly the joints, but it can become unfathomably harder when you attempt to do it at an elite level like these dudes who tried to run on a treadmill at the new marathon world record pace that was recently set in Chicago.

Kelvin Kiptum set a new marathon world record earlier this month in Chicago. And not to take away anything whatsoever from his new world record, but by setting the new time at 2:00:35 it’s become clear that we will soon live in a world where someone runs a full 26 mile marathon in under 2 hours.

Kiptum broke the previous record by 34 seconds at the Chicago Marathon and he so (in part) by running a 4:21 mile in the 19th mile. That’s lightning fast. So what do these average joes from the UK’s SportBible/ladbible do? They attempt to run at that speed on a treadmill and fall flat on their faces.

Here is the same video on Instagram if you’d prefer that over TikTok:

The main takeaway here is, as I said above, running is hard. Even when it’s on a controlled environment like a treadmill. Mess up and you’ll fall flat on your face.

My primary critique of this video is I’d have liked to see them attempt the record pace in the same shoes what Kelvin Kiptum wore in Chicago. Elite marathoner shoes are as futuristic as a rocket shop.
