If you recently purchased any bags of shredded cheese at Walmart, Target, Publix, Aldi, or another retailer, you might want to check them. The reason for that is because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall this week of more than 1.5 million of those bags.

The FDA assigned a risk classification this week to a previous voluntary recall by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. The voluntary recall was first received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration back on Oct. 3 due to certain cheese products potentially containing metal fragments from “supplier raw material.”

This week the shredded cheese recall was given a Class II designation by the FDA. That classification means it is “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” It does, however, also state that the potential for serious injury is remote.

The shredded cheese products sold by the Ohio-based company were distributed to 31 states and Puerto Rico. More than 263,000 cases of shredded cheese are involved in the recall. Each case contains between four and 12 bags.
