Baker Mayfield Called Out NFL’s ‘Random’ Drug Tests During Winning Streak

The NFL claims their drug tests are random and the policies often change. Currently, players can be tested up to 6 times in the offseason with every NFL player receiving one annual test under the PES Policy and then 20% of a team’s players are randomly tested during training camp (10% during the offseason). Some players can be subjected to additional testing which can ad dup to a total of 24 times per year.

But the ‘randomness’ of it all seems suspect, at least according to Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield who sat with the PMT hosts during the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Tahoe.

Baker said that when things were going well in 2020 with the Browns, he was tested “probably 11 times that year” and then went into detail about what it’s like to be tested and how some testers uncomfortably stare at you during the test and how as the person being tested you simply want to get out of there as fast as possible.

It is kind of an odd question to ask another dude, ‘how many times have you been p— tested?’ but in context it makes for great interview fodder and it’s hilarious to hear Baker Mayfield admit he’s far from a peak “physical specimen” that’s often found in the NFL.

Here’s the shorter clip via X:

When Baker and the Browns were going off in 2020 the team was 11-5-0. He threw for 3,563 yards which he’s matched in 4 of his 6 full seasons in the NFL. Baker Mayfield had 26 TDs that season which is 3rd best among those 6 seasons and only 8 interceptions which is his career low. But seriously, what exactly did the NFL think they were going to find in those tests? Perhaps something in his system that might help with focus?

As a lifelong Bucs fan I’m now biased and believe that Baker Mayfield is squeaky clean and has always been that way. And it certainly seems to be the case as 11 tests in one season would’ve turned up some sort of result if anything was wrong.
