Baylor University is at a crossroads when it comes to its college football program. Athletic director Mack Rhoades must decide on whether or not to fire head coach Dave Aranda.

He looked absolutely sick during Saturday’s home loss to BYU.

By all accounts, Rhoades has done a fantastic job since his hire in 2016. The Bears have won 24 Big 12 titles and eight national championships in the last eight years. However, the football team is on a steady decline in the last three seasons.

Matt Rhule left for the Carolina Panthers in 2020. Rhoades replaced him with LSU’s defensive coordinator. The Aranda hire was widely touted as a great decision and it looked that way at first.

Baylor went 12-2 during the 2021 season. It finished the year with win over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl.

There was a palpable buzz in Waco about the football program that came crashing down that next fall.

The Bears are a combined 11-19 in its last 30 games, including a 2-3 record this season and Aranda has completely lost the fanbase. Absolutely nobody showed up to Saturday’s Big 12 opener.

Not only was it the first conference game of the season, BYU was ranked inside the top 25. Even though a 2-2 record did not inspire a high demand for tickets, the stadium should not have been as empty as it was. You could practically hear a pin drop.

To make matters worse, Baylor went down 31-14 at halftime. Aranda’s team rallied some in the second half but the deficit was ultimately too much to overcome and the Bears lost by seven.

Mack Rhoades was in shambles on the sideline.

He was at one point pacing back and forth with his arms above his head next to Jovan Overshown, the Deputy AD and Chief Revenue Officer.

Rhoades has a decision to make about Dave Aranda’s future at Baylor. The fans are doing their best to make it for him by not showing up.
