As the turn of the calendar to March marks the start of postseason tournaments in men’s and women’s college basketball, the Big 12 officially debuted a brand-new court design that will make you want to gauge your eyes out. I do not like to call for other people to lose their jobs but whomever was/is responsible for this new look should be relieved of his or her duties.
It is insufferable to the point that I would (almost) prefer to watch re-runs of the Big Bang Theory instead of subjecting myself to a splitting headache for sake of hoops.
The Big 12 college basketball tournaments, officially known as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, will take place at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri through next Saturday, March 15. The women got underway on Wednesday with the championship game scheduled for Sunday. Then the men are set to takeover the same gym with their first round scheduled for Tuesday.
Therein lies the issue for us viewers at home. Games next week will be played the same court as this week…
The Big 12 basketball court is horrible.
The Big 12 Conference unveiled its first-ever ‘XII Court’ in partnership with global sportswear brand UNDEFEATED. Baselines and sidelines are black, which match the paint. The court itself, in lieu of traditional hardwood, is a medium-light grey color with the XII logo printed repeatedly overtop.

It could look a lot worse from the 300 level because the XII logo blends into the color around it. The same cannot be said for the 100 level or the television broadcast.

I did not know to look for the XII logo when I first caught a glimpse of the new Big 12 court so I thought it was just a bunch of random Xs and Is arranged to create the worst visual design I had ever seen.

To find out that it was on purpose blew my mind. Who approved this?

Maybe the Big 12 subscribes to the thinking that all publicity is good publicity. People are talking about the court, and thus the tournament, and thus the conference. However, the viewers who are tuning in to watch the women play this week are likely turning it off as soon as they discover the eyesore.

Whomever decided this was a good idea needs not to return to the think tank for next year. The gimmicky stuff never goes as planned. This Big 12 basketball court is the latest example.
