Bill Belichick wants to get back on the sideline and North Carolina might be his first (and only?) opportunity to do so during this current cycle. However, Tom Brady, Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski are not so sure their former head coach would be a good fit on the collegiate level.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback offered a hilarious impression of Belichick to drive home his point.
UNC fired Mack Brown, the winningest coach in school history, after he went 44-33 during his second stint with the program over the last six years. A disappointing 6-6 season in 2024 was the kicker.
As the Tar Heels try to find a replacement for Brown, Belichick has emerged as a leading candidate. His initial interview for the job seemed like a PR stunt for both sides but that no longer seems to be the case. North Carolina brass flew to New York to meet with him in person last week and they reportedly discussed a contract, which might include a nepotistic clause for his son Steve.
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Monday morning that “talks between [the two sides] remain ongoing.”
It’s uncertain how deep UNC’s talks with Belichick are, per sources, other than they’ve gone for an extended period of time.
The UNC search has been scattered, according to sources, with an uncertainty in the industry about who is running it. Board of Trustees Chair John P. Preyer has been a key Belichick advocate throughout the process. And he’s galvanized a group at the school behind Belichick’s potential hire.
Some people with ties to Belichick are skeptical that he’d take the job, as he’s never worked in college football. Others say he’s been sincere and thorough in his interest and has a desire to return to the sideline.

To go even one step further, Belichick is good friends with Tar Heels assistant lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala and attended his wedding earlier this year. This could actually happen, maybe, even though it still feels like a long shot.
Is Bill Belichick a good fit for UNC?
Tom Brady does not have any inside information about his former head coach. Edelman and Gronk also do not know anything that hasn’t already been reported, but the trio of former New England Patriots discussed the idea of Belichick to Chapel Hill on Fox NFL Sunday. They all seem to agree that it would not be a good fit.
Belichick will be 73 years old next football season and Brady doesn’t think he can relate to 18-year-olds. His impression of the future Pro Football Hall of Fame coach trying to recruit high schoolers to UNC left Michael Strahan, Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw in stitches. (3:35 in the video below!)

To be fair, Bill Belichick is currently dating a 24-year-old who supposedly likes him for his vivacious personality and intellect. Perhaps he is able to relate to the youth better than Brady suspects!
