Bill O’Brien went scorched earth on ESPN over what he deemed to be a false report during Boston College’s dominant win over Duquesne on Saturday. His quarterback, Thomas Castellanos, might’ve leaked some information that the head coach didn’t want to get out!
Either that, or the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader made it up.
O’Brien, 54, took over the program in Chestnut Hill after an unsuccessful season with the New England Patriots and a (less than) one-month stint as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. The Eagles allowed him an opportunity to be a head coach on the FBS level in his home city and the hire is already paying off!
Boston College started the year with a statement win over Florida State in Tallahassee. It kept the momentum going with a 56-0 victory over the Dukes on Saturday.
Although a blowout at home over an FCS program might not seem impressive, the Eagles beat a bad team the way that a good team should beat a bad team. That doesn’t always happen in college football. Power Four programs often play down to lesser competition. The foot sometimes comes off of the gas.
ESPN said during the game that O’Brien spent the week trying to prevent a similar scenario.
However, where most coaches typically show their players an example of an FCS over FBS upset as what not to do, he went in the opposite direction. ESPN reported that O’Brien showed Boston College tape of an FBS program putting a beatdown on an FCS program as what to do. Castellanos supposedly told the broadcast crew about his new head coach’s unique approach.

O’Brien claims that never happened. He went on a passionate rant in denial of the report during his postgame press conference.
ESPN’s crew said Bill O’Brien showed @BCFootball FBS teams hammering FCS teams from Week 1 to show team how to handle their business vs. DUQ

O’Brien pushed against this postgame:
“I’ll be honest with you – I don’t know the difference between FBS, FCS. NCIS, CIA, I have no… pic.twitter.com/ZgYgHGcNqC
Is Bill O’Brien telling the truth?
We don’t know! It seems strange that ESPN would report something that Castellanos said as gospel if he didn’t say it, but BoB was pretty adamant that it never happened.
