What the Florida Gators are doing with Billy Napier is unfair to the college football players and the head coach himself. They continue to string him along week by week with the looming threat of being fired.
It feels more like a “when” than an “if” but stranger things have happened.
Meanwhile, the fanbase in Gainesville continues to call for his head. Even after a good win in the most grueling conference in college football!
When will Billy Napier be fired?
This has been a question for over a year now. The Gators rallied down the stretch in 2024 to give their head coach another year at the helm with high expectations for a run to the College Football Playoff. Napier and five-star quarterback D.J. Lagway were supposed to lead them to the promised land.
They didn’t.
Florida currently sits at 3-4 through the first seven games of the season. Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida State (and Kentucky) are still on the schedule. It could get ugly.
Meanwhile, there is this ongoing game of “will they?” / “won’t they?”
Napier is probably going to be fired. “Probably” being the key word.
The university basically said that it is going to fire its head football coach at some point, eventually, but won’t actually pull the trigger. He is a lame duck. His remaining time with the Gators could last just hours. It could last weeks. We don’t know.
That puts both Napier and his players in a horrible position. They are tasked with trying to prepare for an SEC gauntlet while the university dangles the ouster of their head coach over their heads, which cannot be good for their psyche.
Florida fans make it even worse.
Florida won a conference game on Saturday night.
A win is a win is a win. It should be celebrated. Even if it is against a lower-tier program like Mississippi State, that is not easy to do! Especially in the SEC.
And yet, Gators fans still ruthlessly booed their head coach off of the field. AFTER A WIN!!!
Chants of ‘Fire Napier’ broke out during the second quarter.

Bill Napier seems to know, like everybody, that his time in Gainesville is nearing its conclusion. He spent extra time with his family on the field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium after what could be his final win at Florida.
It’s time for “Billy Ball” to come to an end in Gainesville. Gator fans want him out chanting “Fire Billy” throughout the 4th qtr. He was booed leaving the field after waiting a long time to leave the field after taking pics with his family. Seems Napier knows the end is near. pic.twitter.com/c70n6LEgfT

It should’ve been a joyous moment for the head coach. The university took that away from him and his players.
