Billy Napier is not going to be fired as the head college football coach at Florida after a disastrous loss to LSU on Saturday. The university announced after its loss to South Florida that he is the guy… for now.

I don’t know if that means Napier will get the entire season or if that means he will get a few more weeks.

It really doesn’t matter either way. The Gators are not going to keep him around for another college football season unless they go on a 10- or 11-game winning streak— which they won’t.

Florida lost to LSU.

Florida actually out-gained LSU on offense, ran more plays, punted less times, recorded more first downs and had more time of possession. And yet, the Gators scored only 10 points, all in the first half.

  • FIRST DOWNS
    • LSU — 10
    • Florida — 23
  • TOTAL YARDS
    • LSU — 316
    • Florida — 366
  • TOTAL PLAYS
    • LSU — 52
    • Florida — 76
  • TIME OF POSSESSION
    • LSU — 22:14
    • Florida — 37:46
  • PUNTS
    • LSU — 7
    • Florida — 5

Florida was also more effective on third and fourth down. LSU also racked up 11 more penalty yards.

If I was to stop right there, you would think the Gators beat the Tigers. They didn’t.

D.J. Lagway threw five interceptions. He, Jadan Baugh, Ja’Kobi Jackson and Duke Clark combined for only 79 yards rushing on 17 total carries. LSU won 20-10.

Billy Napier lost the locker room.

On-field results are one thing. Culture is another.

Not only did Florida lose a game it absolutely could have (and probably should have) won, the players showed their lack of care during the alma mater. Very few of them stuck around to sing.

Only nine or 10 guys stayed on the field after the loss.

Most of them were there to greet friends and/or family in the crowd. The rest of them were making their way back to the locker room while the band played their school’s song.

Credit to true freshman Jayden Woods (wearing No. 15) for standing tall in the face of defeat. Freshman running back Byron Louis (wearing No. 27) as well. Everybody else was checked out or gone.

As far as I am aware, Florida players are not required to stick around for the alma mater but it is a culture thing. Just to compare — this was the scene after the loss to South Florida last weekend:

Maybe it was because it was at home but there were twice, if not three or four times as many Gators who stayed on the field to stand for the alma mater compared to the scene in Baton Rouge. It does not reflect well on head coach Billy Napier. His team no longer cares. It’s over.
