Jean-Claude Van Damme’s classic martial arts movie ‘Bloodsport’ is getting a remake.
According to a report from Variety, A24 plans to finance and distribute the film with ‘I May Destroy You’ creator Michaela Coel writing and directing the film.
“I May Destroy You” creator Michaela Coel is writing and directing a remake of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s martial arts classic “Bloodsport” for A24.
A24 will finance and distribute the “Bloodsport” remake. Marc Toberoff, whom Vanity Fair once described as “Elon Musk’s Hollywood-loving lawyer,” will produce. Alberto Lensi will also serve as a producer. Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle will serve as executive producers.
“In 1988, the now-iconic ‘Bloodsport’ introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts,” said Toberoff. “I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again.”
Cole spoke to Variety about her upcoming project.
“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them,” Coel said. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S F-CKING GO.”
Bloodsport fans on social media are not so sure about the 80s classic getting a modern remake.
“No remake will ever capture the essence of the original,” commented one fan on X.
“I’m sure the people involved with this are talented and all, but there’s no point in remaking Bloodsport if the soundtrack and Van Damme’s facial expressions are not gonna be there,” said another fan.
As of now, plot details have not been released for the upcoming ‘Bloodsport’ remake.
