For as legendary of a broadcaster that Bob Costas is, he is not well-liked by large swaths of baseball fans for his working calling Major League Baseball games. Something about the soft, drawn-out, conversational way that he does those games just rubs people the wrong way.

But, it was something else that bothered many on social media during his call of Game 2 of the Royals-Yankees series from Yankee Stadium on Monday. Costas was criticized for treating Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton with kid gloves after he was doubled up on a ground ball that pretty much every other player in the league would’ve beaten out.

The New York Yankees won a nip-and-tuck Game 1, 6-5, setting up a pivotal Game 2 back at Yankee Stadium. But, it was the Royals who controlled the game, overcoming an early 1-0 deficit to score 4 runs in the 4th inning and take a 4-1 lead.

The Yankees never seriously threatened to tie the game, but they had a glimmer of hope a few times to get a rally going. One of those times was in the 8th inning when Giancarlo Stanton came up with a runner on 1st and one out with the Bronx Bombers trailing 4-1.

Stanton, who had drove in the first run of the game with a hot shot to shortstop that Bobby Witt Jr. couldn’t handle, hit another ball hard to shortstop, this time in the hole, making Witt dive. But, he was unable to beat out the double play on a ball that nearly every other player in the league would’ve legged out.

Bob Costas says that it isn’t Stanton’s fault that he has third-percentile sprint speed and often doesn’t hustle to first base. He talks as if Stanton is a war hero that injured his legs fighting to protect our country. Instead, he’s just an injury prone, overpaid slugger. If it’s not Stanton’s fault? Whose fault is it, Bob Costas?

The Yankees lost 4-2. Game 3 is at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Wednesday.
