Commanders Linebacker Bobby Wagner Once Watched ‘The Martian’ Without Sound Because He Didn’t Understand How In-Flight Movies Work

Washington Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner, like many of you, has seen the Ridley Scott film The Martian. Unlike the rest of us, however, he watched it without any sound or subtitles.

During a recent episode of Hard Knocks In Season with the NFC East, likely future Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Wagner detailed the time he once watched the Matt Damon-starring sci-fi The Martian without any sound while he was on a flight.

Washington Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner revealed that he once watched the Matt Damon movie The Martian without any sound

“You see The Martian? Where he gets stuck in space? You know that’s the only movie I’ve watched with no sound. And I watched the whole movie.”

“I had nothing, bro,” when one of his teammates asked if he had subtitles on.

“I made up my own, like, just, what I thought was going on,” Wagner explained. “I was on the airplane — I missed the part where they said, pass out out the headphones. So I don’t have the headphones that stick into the little thing. The lady next to me had just started watching it and I just saw crazy s— going on. And I low-key watched the whole movie. And it was interesting!”

Then his teammates asked why he didn’t ask the flight attendant for headphones, and his answer got even weirder.

“I don’t even think I was supposed to be watching the movie. It wasn’t on my screen — it was somebody else screen. So I didn’t want her to know that I was looking at her screen… but it was a good movie. And I always said to myself, ‘Man, I need to watch that movie with sound!'”

Being able to watch a movie and enjoy it without any sound is a testament to the quality of the film itself. A common explain of this is Mad Max: Fury Road, which can largely be understood and enjoyed to the same extent regardless of whether or not there’s any dialogue.

Wagner’s story, however, further adds to the stereotype that most athletes bumble through any aspect of life that doesn’t have to do with sports. Like, how do you not know how watching movies on a plane works?
