Harvard Students Got Outfoxed By Boston College Hockey Fans Who Hijacked A Huge Chunk Of Their Beanpot Tickets

Boston College cruised to a win over Northeastern in their Beanpot showdown on Monday night. However, that wasn’t the only victory that the Eagles secured, as B.C. fans were apparently able to harness a link that was supposed to be reserved for Harvard students to snag tickets to the game.

The annual Beanpot tournament is one of the coolest traditions college hockey has to offer, as the men’s teams representing Harvard, Boston University, Northeastern, and Boston College have been taking part in the single-elimination tournament that traditionally kicks off at the start of February on an annual basis since 1952.

B.C. is the only member of that quartet that’s a member of a Power 4 conference, but the performance of their football and basketball teams has left a lot to be desired over the past couple of decades. Their hockey team, on the other hand, is usually one of the best in the country, and the Beanpot tends to be one of the most anticipated events of the year for students at all of those learning institutions.

Harvard entered this year’s Beanpot as the defending champions, but a new one will be crowned in 2025 after a B.U. squad that’s currently ranked at No. 8 handily dispatched in a 7-1 game on Monday.

The Terriers will be facing off against No. 1 Boston College in the title game next week, as the Eagles easily handled Northeastern in an 8-2 contest where all of the winning team’s goals were scored by a different player.

It would appear B.C. students also got a win over their peers across the Charles River prior to the game, as The Harvard Crimson reports undergrads in Chestnut Hill were able to use a link that was supposed to be reserved for the scholars in Cambridge to attend the Beanpot in order to snag the highly-coveted tickets.

The outlet says Harvard’s athletic department sent the link out to students shortly after the sale went live last Thursday while informing them they could “secure their tickets using their Harvard email address.”

However, people who clicked the link didn’t actually have to enter an email address affiliated with the school to purchase them, and it was somehow obtained by B.C. students who distributed it to fellow fans who were able to take advantage (people who purchase Beanpot tickets earn the right to attend both games on the slate at TD Garden).

A Harvard spokesperson asserted the link had been shared by students who simply sent it to other people at Boston College before the allotment swiftly sold out, while a representative for B.C. denied any knowledge of what transpired while adding “I am told that BC’s student ticket allotment sold out very quickly, which is not surprising given the team’s success and popularity on campus.”

Harvard and Northeastern will face off in the consolation game next Monday, while B.U. will look to avenge back-to-back losses in the most recent installment of the Battle of Commonwealth Avenue when they face off against B.C. in the championship.
