Virginia Tech was shocked by Vanderbilt in its 2024 season opener, falling to the Commodores in overtime, 34-27. As if the loss as a two-touchdown favorite wasn’t bad enough, head coach Brent Pry decided to make it worse.

He opened his program up to ridicule with a “1-0” message following the surprising defeat.

The Hokies traveled to Nashville on Saturday looking to kick off the year with a win over an SEC opponent. They quickly found themselves behind the eight-ball, though.

Vanderbilt scored the first 17 points of the game, taking a 20-3 lead into the halftime break. Virginia Tech battled to take a late fourth quarter lead before the Commodores forced overtime.

The ‘Dores would later win in the extra session, spoiling the Hokies’ season opener. You wouldn’t know it by Brent Pry’s most recent tweet, though!

The “1-0” message sparked an immediate response online. Some believed the tweet was scheduled with the expectation that Virginia Tech would beat the Commodores, then forgotten about following the loss.

The fact that it’s been up for more than five hours, though, likely means it was intentional.

Pry wants his team to have a 1-0 mindset for this week. It has nothing to do with the prior outcomes. He’s focused on going 1-0 against Marshall – that’s it!

Unfortunately, his team is currently 0-1, and this tweet made the Hokies an easy target for college football fans.

We’ll see if Pry can achieve his goal as that matchup with the Thundering Herd approaches. These types of motivational messages will continue to be criticized if not!
