Virtually every golf fan is aware of the health issues Tiger Woods has faced as well as the personal battle he’s fought thanks to some of the substances he’s used to address them, but one commentator at the British Open found himself subjected to backlash thanks to an incredibly out-of-pocket assertion he made during the opening round.

At this point, there’s no denying Tiger Woods is firmly in the twilight of his career thanks in no small part to the lingering effects of the debilitating injuries he sustained in a car crash in 2021 that almost led to his leg being amputated.

The golf legend was certainly no stranger to physical setbacks prior to that point, as the back issues that required him to undergo multiple surgeries in the mid-2010s essentially ended a reign of dominance that spanned more than 15 years.

Those injuries are inextricably linked to the DUI charge he was hit with in 2017 after being pulled over in Florida with a cocktail of drugs (specifically THC, Xanax, Ambien, and multiple prescription painkillers) in his system, which led to him checking into an inpatient facility to get the problem under control.

There’s no way to know how the 48-year-old is currently dealing with the ailments that continue to hamper his play, although it seems like there’s a very good chance he’s one of the many professional athletes who take advantage of the modern medicine at their disposal while operating within the rules of the sport.

However, one broadcaster covering the British Open made a very bold assertion while covering Tiger’s opening round on Thursday.

Mark Roe (a retired pro who played on the European Tour and is probably best known for being DQed from The Open in 2003) found himself subjected to a wave of criticism online when he decided to play the role of an armchair physician by saying “You gotta think there’s a lot of painkillers being taken,” a diagnosis he came to because…he looked at Tiger’s eyes?

Just because you can say something doesn’t mean you should—especially when your comments are being broadcast around the world.
