Brittney Griner, the WNBA star who spent ten months detained in Russia, is writing a book about her experiences. According to reports, Griner is hoping to raise awareness on behalf of other Americans who are wrongly imprisoned across the world.
The 32-year-old Griner was originally arrested back in February 2022 after she was found to have hash oil in her luggage while traveling to Russia to play in their women’s basketball league during the WNBA’s offseason.
Griner was charged with smuggling charges and went to trial in July, where she was found guilty and sentenced to nine years in a penal colony. In December 2022, Griner returned back to the United States in a prisoner exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who is otherwise known as the “Merchant of Death.”
In her official statement, Griner specifically name-checked a litany of American citizens who are currently being detained abroad such as Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, Emad Shargi, Airan Berry, Shahab Dalili, Luke Denman, Eyvin Hernandez, Majd Kamalmaz, Jerrel Kenemore, Kai Li, Siamak Namazi, Austin Tice, Mark Swidan and Morad Tahbaz.
“I arrived in Moscow to rejoin the UMMC Ekaterinburg basketball team and was immediately detained at the airport. That day was the beginning of an unfathomable period in my life which only now am I ready to share,” Griner wrote on Instagram.
“The primary reason I traveled back to Russia for work that day was because I wanted to make my wife, family, and teammates proud. After an incredibly challenging 10 months in detainment, I am grateful to have been rescued and to be home. Readers will hear my story and understand why I’m so thankful for the outpouring of support from people across the world.”
The former Baylor Bear, similar to all major news stories these days, has become a heavily politicized figure, and as a result, the news of her book is obviously prompting some strong reactions.

Some people are taking particular issue with the suggestion that Griner was “wrongfully” detained when she was sentenced to nearly a decade in an infamous penal colony for marijuana.

Should be 1 page, “Don’t bring drugs into a foreign country where it’s against the law.” The end. https://t.co/OSRumt6hye
