For some reason, TNT is still giving former coach-turned-college basketball analyst Bruce Pearl a platform to spout his special brand of nonsense.

Thursday night, while discussing North Carolina’s decision to fire its men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis, Pearl was back at it again.

“I just hate hearing the words ‘Hubert Davis was fired at UNC.’ That sentence right there bothers me to my core,” Bruce Pearl said. “Because if Hubert Davis, who has had such a great career, and Jalen [Rose], to your point, with his character and everything like that, can be let go because he didn’t win enough when his best player got hurt? That’s why I’m sitting here, guys. That’s part of the reason why I’m sitting here. Because there is no loyalty anymore.”

What loyalty is Bruce Pearl referring to?

Hubert Davis has deep ties to the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball program. He played college basketball there from 1988 to 1992. He holds the record for the highest career three-point percentage in school history. In his senior season, he led the team with a 21.4 points-per-game average.

After being drafted 20th overall in the 1992 NBA Draft, Davis went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA. Following his retirement, he returned to North Carolina as an assistant coach for the 2012–13 season.

When legendary coach Roy Williams retired, the Tar Heels named Davis the head coach in 2021. He won at least 20 games in each of his five seasons as the head coach in North Carolina. In the 2023-24 season, Davis led North Carolina to a 29-8 record and a trip to the Sweet 16.

In the most recent season, Davis and the Tar Heels went 24-9, finished fourth in the ACC, but were bounced from the NCAA tournament in the first round by Virginia Commonwealth. It was the second straight year that North Carolina had lost in the first round of the tournament.

Making matters worse, despite being without Caleb Wilson in the 2026 NCAA tournament, the Tar Heels still managed to build a 19-point lead in the first round game against VCU. They would go on to blow that lead in the loss to the 11th-seeded Rams.

Fans found Bruce Pearl whining about loyalty to be rather ironic

So, Bruce Pearl’s comments, especially coming from someone who has left a trail of controversy behind him at almost every school he coached, were considered to be pretty rich by many fans.

This guy is a f— moron,” one basketball fan commented on X. “No loyalty? From the guy who cheated at [every] stop he was at.”

“Says the guy who quit 2 mins before the season started,” read another comment.

*checks Auburn coaching staff*” another person noted, referring to Bruce Pearl’s son, who got his job at Auburn largely based on nepotism.
