Bruce Pearl Claims He’s Never Heard Of One Of The Most Famous Rappers On The Planet

It’s pretty hard to rack up over 700 wins as a college basketball coach without being pretty obsessed with the sport. The demands that come with that position can also make it difficult to have your finger on the pulse of pop culture, but it’s still hard to believe Bruce Pearl has somehow gone nearly three decades without familiarizing himself with one of the most popular rappers of all time.

It’s been close to 35 years since Bruce Pearl secured his first gig as the head coach of a college basketball team when he took over at Southern Indiana ahead of the D-II program’s 1992-93 campaign. He upgraded to the next level when he headed to Milwaukee in 2001, which was followed by stints at Tennessee and Auburn, and the 706 victories he’s collectively collected currently puts him in 70th place on the all-time list.

The 2025-26 season marked the first time he wasn’t patrolling the sidelines since his NCAA-mandated hiatus from 2011 to 2014, as Pearl resigned as the head coach of the Tigers last year before installing his son, Steven, as the successor of a program that went 19-16 during his inaugural run.

The elder Pearl pivoted to a career in broadcasting after inking a deal to cover games for TNT and CBS. He’s been doing his thing during the NCAA Tournament, and we were treated to a pretty preposterous claim during the slate of March Madness games that unfolded on Sunday.

Bruce Peal says he’s never heard of Eminem

On Sunday, UCLA faced off against UConn in what would end up being the last game of the season for the Bruins, and Tom Fornelli chimed in on the outfit Mick Cronin was rocking when he rolled up to the arena by referencing the opening lines of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”

The 66-year-old Pearl could be forgiven for not grasping that reference, and he acknowledged he had not seen 8 Mile, the movie that the Detroit native who penned the song also starred in. However, things took a turn when he revealed he had also never heard of Eminem, which generated an understandably shocked reaction from his fellow panelists.

There is absolutely zero chance that a man who coached hundreds of basketball games after Eminem burst onto the scene in the late 1990s has never heard his music, and there’s a very good chance that “Lose Yourself” ended up being pumped through the speakers at a good chunk of them.

He also coached plenty of players who probably would have been pumping Eminem’s music during the rapper’s heyday, which makes his ignorance even more impressive.

This would be a very strange thing to lie about, so while I don’t have any reason to think Pearl isn’t telling the truth, I would love to know how he managed to go as long as he did without even being familiar with Eminem’s existence.
