Only a very, very small list of teams are going to be able to afford Washington Nationals superstar Bryce Harper when he becomes a free agent in a couple of years. That’s because Harper is reportedly going to be looking for a contract somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 million. (It’s a very nice neighborhood.)

So when someone as knowledgeable and respected as Peter Gammons starts throwing around rumors that Harper really wants to play for the Chicago Cubs, well, it gets people’s attention.

Which is exactly what Gammons did when he appeared on The Mully and Hanley Show in Chicago the other day.

While a move like that certainly wouldn’t turn the Cubs into Major League Baseball’s version of the Golden State Warriors, it sure would make it a whole lot tougher on the rest of the National League.

The only obstacle would, of course, be money. While the Cubs do have Kris Bryant until their control until 2021, there’s a pretty good chance that if he keeps raking like he has been he’s going to want to renegotiate at some point before then. Having two superstars with massive contracts might just be more than the Cubs can handle financially.

Here’s the full audio of Gammons discussing the possibility…

Affordable or not, just the prospect of Harper and Bryant in the same lineup has Cubs fans very excited…
