Panthers Head Coach Contradicted His Quarterback Decision With Bryce Young Trade Plans

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales contradicted himself, again, when it comes to the future of Bryce Young. He offered high praise for his team’s quarterback room while discussing potential trade plans.

The first year of his tenure with the NFL’s worst-run organization has been a rollercoaster!

Canales was excited to take the Carolina job in January, in large part because of Young. There was a lot of buzz around the former Heisman Trophy and No. 1 overall pick’s ability to perform in a new system with a new coach. The Panthers added a new wide receiver in the draft to give him another weapon.

They only won two games in 2023 so the floor couldn’t get much lower. Any signs of competence would’ve been an improvement.

Unfortunately, Young played poorly during the first two games of the new season. He completed 56 passes for 245 yards (total) with three interceptions and zero touchdowns. Not one.

Carolina was out-scored 73-13 in back-to-back losses.

Canales stood by his quarterback after Sunday’s loss to Los Angeles and reaffirmed that he will be the starter moving forward. Andy Dalton was then named as the starter on Monday without any warning.

Young was/is furious with the blindside decision, and understandably so! It came out of nowhere. His head coach pulled the rug out from under him.

One might assume that Canales’ okie-doke marked the end of Young’s time with the Panthers. He could be a great trade piece for a team that is in desperate need of a potential long-term quarterback because of an injury, like the Dolphins. Carolina clearly doesn’t want him.

Except… it does?

Canales was asked about the possibility of trading Bryce Young on Wednesday. His answer was yet another contradiction to previous statements.

The 43-year-old said the Panthers “loves where they’re at” because they “have a great situation with their quarterbacks” right now. A potential trade of either signal-caller is not on the radar.

A lot of what Canales said is coach speak. He tip-toed around the truth and contradicted himself, yet again.

If Carolina truly loves its “great” quarterback situation, then it would’ve started Dalton over Young to start the year. It would’ve scored more than 13 points. It wouldn’t have relegated its former first overall pick to the bench after two bad games.

Being entirely unwilling to trade Young while actively sitting him behind a 36-year-old on a team that does not have any legitimate playoff hopes is a rather confusing stance. The Panthers are a mess.
