Golf has been historically viewed as a gentleman’s sport, and Bryson DeChambeau took that spirit to heart based on what Matthieu Pavon had to say about the exchange they had after his playing partner sunk the putt that clinched his second U.S. Open championship.
Bryson DeChambeau headed into the final round of the U.S. Open with a three-stroke lead over the rest of the field, but Rory McIlroy had managed to narrow that margin to one stroke by the time the two men arrived on the back nine.
As you likely know, the Northern Irishman came up short in his quest to end his decade-long major drought after bogeying three of his last four holes, and DeChambeau was able to walk away with the victory by hitting a gorgeous shot out of the bunker on the 18th before sinking the short putt that secured the win.
The champion was paired with Matthieu Pavon for the final round of the tournament, and after his playing partner’s celebration died down, the Frenchman quietly made a putt on what was essentially the exact same line to secure fifth place and take home a cool $843,765 in the process.
Pavon’s final shot was close enough to the hole where he could’ve tapped it in before letting DeChambeau attempt the one he needed to make to avoid a playoff with McIlroy.
However, he decided to take a minute to collect himself, and during a recent interview with Dan Rapaport, he said Bryson thanked him for going that route due to his respect for Rory.

Here’s what he had to say:
“When we got to the side, I said, ‘Bryson, I’m really sorry, dude. I should have probably finished it.’
He said, ‘Dude, you’ve done the right thing. It’s important for you. Thanks for not doing it, because you would have shown me the line, and I think it’s not fair for Rory, and I don’t want to win it that way.'”
Just when you thought Bryson couldn’t get more likable, he goes and does something like that.
