Did BYU Basketball Coach Misinterpret Anti-Mormon Chant From Oklahoma State Students?

Young blasted the Cowboys‘ students’ section for a supposedly explicit Anti-Mormon chant heard raining down from the stands. He condemned the antics in his postgame presser.

The Cougars travelled to Stillwater looking to get back in the win column after dropping three of their last four games. Their efforts would fall short as Oklahoma State picked up a signature win.

The Cowboys entered as a home underdog at 15-6 on the year. They needed the victory to continue climbing the Big 12 standings and build NCAA Tournament momentum.

Oklahoma State was on the outside looking in in terms of the latest Bracketology projections. That could change after beating BYU.

Oklahoma State picked up a huge basketball win over BYU.

The Cowboys went back and forth with the Cougars on Wednesday. The game was tied at 41-41 at halftime. It would remain close until the latter parts of the final 20 minutes.

Oklahoma State trailed 61-60 with 11 minutes to play. They used a 21-8 run to regain the lead in an eventual 99-92 triumph.

Students stormed the court after the fact.

The excitement is appreciated. Kevin Young took offense to some other antics that occurred during the contest.

Did crowd say “F- the Mormons?”

“There were some ‘F- the Mormons’ chants tonight by the students’ section,” Young said in closing his presser. “It’s a great win for Oklahoma State University. Their fans should be proud.

“It’d be great if some class was there as well. I’ve got four small kids at home. I’m a Mormon. When I go home, they’re going to ask me about it, the same way they asked me about it last year at Arizona.

“There’s just too much hate in the world to be saying stuff like that.”

This, as the coach noted, is something that Cougar sports teams deal with frequently during road trips. In the past, the Big 12 has fined colleges for hateful rhetoric.

Colorado was reprimanded publicly by the conference this past football season after a game vs. BYU. The school received a $50,000 fine for supporters’ actions.

Oklahoma State fans, however, argue that a different chant was being sung on Wednesday night. Many on social media insist the students were saying, “Ref’s a Mormon,” in response to a bad call.

That is plausible with at least one occurrence taking place with the Cougars at the free throw line. Another appeared to follow an Oklahoma State foul or change of possession.

It’s hard to tell exactly what was said from the online videos. Kevin Young has his opinion.

We’ll see if the league reprimands Oklahoma State in response to the chants, or if it sides with the Cowboys.
