Kelsey Plum took an unnecessary shot at Caitlin Clark and her team for failing to attend the WNBA players meeting prior to the All-Star Game. They were not there to discuss the pregame protest in favor of proper pay because of a hangover but they still wore the t-shirts during warmups!
The Los Angeles Sparks point guard’s ill-advised comments were blown way out of proportion.
A new report reveals the full story behind what happened at the WNBA All-Star Weekend. It was a big misunderstanding that became much ado about nothing.
Kelsey Plum should’ve kept her mouth shut.
All of the players sent a message to team owners and league commissioner Cathy Engelbert. They wore black t-shirts printed with the words ‘Pay Us What You Owe Us’ in direct response to the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations. Clark too.
For some reason, Plum put Clark and her teammates on blast during the postgame press conference. She exposed them for failing to attend the meeting to discuss the t-shirt plan.
“Not to tattletale, but zero members of Team Clark were very present for that,” she said. Even Sabrina Ionescu was perplexed.
KP: "It was a very powerful moment. As players, we didn't know that that was going to happen. It was a genuine surprise. The t shirt was determined this morning. Not to tattletale: 0 members of Team Clark were very present for that" https://t.co/2fXgaAuqMR pic.twitter.com/awIfnqLjxv

There was absolutely no reason for her to throw that out there. It was needless fodder for a media firestorm.
The joke completely missed.
As you could imagine, the internet ran wild with the perceived disrespect.
By all accounts, Kelsey Plum and Caitlin Clark are cool. They don’t have any preexisting beef. The latter recently took a playful jab at the former regarding their different brand allegiances. They’re friends!!
And yet, Plum’s needless quip made it seem like there is tension between them.
Caitlin Clark and company were hungover.
All of the WNBA players on Team Clark had themselves a Friday night. They were lit.

Their hangovers hit them pretty hard the next day. It was a slower morning.
The majority of Team Clark did not make it to breakfast on Saturday because of their late night and the t-shirt meeting to which Kelsey Plum referred during her press conference took place during breakfast. Thus, the players who were not at breakfast also did not attend the meeting.
“WNBA players —including Kelsey Plum— had been discussing the “Pay Us What You Owe Us” t-shirts for over a week, according to multiple sources,” reported Ramona Shelburne. “They settled on the idea at a breakfast Saturday morning that very few players on Team Clark attended because of the early start. But just to make sure, sources said Nneka Ogwumike, Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier went by the Team Clark locker room before the game to make sure others were on board with the idea & plan. They were.”
And yet, the way Plum put Team Clark on blast made it seem like an intentional snub when it wasn’t.
She took a shot at Caitlin Clark and company even though it was supposed to be a joke. There was no reason to say what she said in the first place but her comments didn’t need to become what they did.
Players who went out on Friday night did not attend breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning so they missed the meeting. That’s it.
