College Gameday descended upon Berkeley for the first time in ESPN history as Cal prepared to host top-10 Miami on Saturday night in Northern California. The Golden Bears camped out overnight to make their presence felt and the #Calgorithim completely took over.

It was an impressive showing from a place that “lives in the weird.”

Berkeley, of course, is one of the most liberal cities in the United States— if not the entire world. Politically speaking, the birthplace of the 1960s Free Speech Movement leans as far to left as possible.

Although politics and sports often mix like water and vinegar, this year is different. Head coach Justin Wilcox has his team playing really good ball. Cal is 3-1. The Bears have a lot of momentum.

Meanwhile, as the program continues to rise, the #Calgorithm continues to wreak havoc on social media. A group of Berkeley-based burner accounts produce some of the funniest posts on X with a heavy lean into the liberal nature of the university and the city. It exploded in Week 2 when Cal beat Auburn on the road and has not stopped since.

Avinash Kunnath wrote a great article on how ‘Cal Twitter’ enter the zeitgeist of college football culture by turning stereotypes associated with the university on their head. Gameday would not be on campus without hundreds, if not thousands of memes over the last few weeks.

Cal vs. Miami in particular was dubbed ‘Communists vs. Convicts’ and/or ‘Woke vs. Coke.’

The Calgorithm showed up in mass for the 6:00 a.m. broadcast. Even though fans were not allowed onto Memorial Glade until midnight on Saturday morning, they took matters into their own hands. Utter chaos proceeded to unfold under the guise of darkness as students stormed onto the quad in direct defiance of the minimal security in place to stop them.

They brought the party, (plenty of weed) — and hilarious signs! Here are some of the best:

Others include:

“Nice chains, Miami but have U seen our Nobel Prizes?”

“This poster is worth more than a UMiami degree”

“Too busy with midterms, no poster time”

“I only do lines of… code”

“You people are blocking the library”

These are just the signs that ESPN actually allowed in! Imagine what the confiscated pile looks like…

It was an incredible scene for College Gameday on Saturday morning. Berkeley made itself known and the Calgorithm made its presence felt!
