Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has not had the season that many expected from him after Chicago made him the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. His struggles have been well-publicized and contributed to the firing off offensive coordinator Shane Waldron this week.
Some have questioned the maturity of Caleb Williams. But, he showed that he is taking ownership of his poor play and is stepping up as a leader.
Halas Hall was thrown into turmoil this week when they fired Shane Waldron. Make no mistake, Shane Waldron was doing a really poor job as an offensive coordinator. But, Caleb Williams was struggling as well. The USC alum was holding on to the ball too long, taking sacks, and missing open receivers.
On Sunday. FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer had this to say about the way that Caleb Williams took responsibility this week.
Bears rookie QB Caleb Williams actually got up in a team meeting after OC Shane Waldron was fired and APOLOGIZED for his part in the offense stalling enough where Waldron was fired. Teammates were very impressed by the accountability and his decision to do that.
It’s always good to see a young quarterback step up in this way, especially one whose leadership had been questioned in the press.
And, on Sunday, it was a brand new Caleb Williams out there on the field. Williams was 23/31 for 231 yards, and led a fantastic drive to win the game. Unfortunately, the rival Packers blocked the kick, but Williams certainly played well enough to win.
That’s the type of game the rookie can build on, and the type of performance that will have his teammates believing in him.
