Cam Newton is unhappy with the College Football Playoff’s preferential treatment of Notre Dame. His anger clouded his ability to think clearly.

The former Auburn passer called the Fighting Irish irrelevant during a recent appearance on ESPN. He quickly wound up with egg on his face.

Newton joined First Take to speak on a recent CFP update. The playoff field will remain at 12 teams in 2026 amid a push to move to a 16-school setup.

While the size of the field will stay the same, much will change in the selection process.

The Power 4 conference champions will receive automatic bids, regardless of rankings. That represents a shift from last year when ACC champ Duke was left out of the field for Tulane and James Madison.

Notre Dame will also get an auto bid if ranked in the Top 12.

In last year’s bracket, that would’ve meant national runner-up Miami was left out for the Fighting Irish. The agreement created an immediate college football controversy.

Cam Newton is angry.

The former Heisman trophy winner is paid to give his takes on sports, including college football. He had many questioning why on Friday.

The topic of the CFP adjustments was introduced to the group. Newton had the following to say.

“Bump Notre Dame. I’m gonna tell you this. You start to think about the preferential treatment that Notre Dame has gotten, will get, and will continue to get. That’s why I’m like, ‘Bump Notre Dame…’

“Notre Dame hasn’t been relevant in years.”

His co-host, Shae Cornette, quickly interjected to remind him that the Fighting Irish played Ohio State in the national championship to end the 2024-25 season – just one year ago.

Newton doubled down, though he backtracked a bit by saying, “Take that one national championship appearance with Coach Freeman away, and they haven’t been relevant for years.”

Cam Newton, like many others around college football, is upset that Notre Dame is being put on a pedestal. He fails to realize that their relevance is what’s led to the preferential treatment.

His anger blinded him in this particular scenario. His refusal to admit he was wrong made it worse.
