Utah QB Cam Rising is entering his seventh season of college football. Somehow, he’s eligible to return next year for an eighth year in Salt Lake City should he choose to do so.

Despite having that extra season in his back pocket, Rising has no plans of competing at the NCAA level in 2025. Even he knows that he’s overstayed his welcome!

The California native has had an interesting path that spans a pair of college campuses. Initially, he signed to play at Texas where he redshirted as a freshman. He’d then redshirt again the following year.

With the Utes in 2020, Rising saw his first game action in his third season, making his first career start vs. USC. After six passing attempts, he suffered a season-ending injury.

Rising shined in 2021 and 2022, throwing for a combined 5,527 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He then suffered a knee injury in the Utes’ bowl game to end that ’22 campaign, forcing him to miss the entire 2023 slate.

Now, he’s back at 100% heading into 2024, his seventh year in the NCAA. Due to transfer rule changes, he has the option to play through 2025-26.

Will he be back for an eighth season? He was asked that very question at Big 12 Media Day on Tuesday.

Cam Rising is not planning to return for another year.

The passer was one of three Utah players to attend the event in Las Vegas, joining teammates Brant Kuithe and Karene Reid. The Utes are a favorite to win the Big 12 in their inaugural season, and Rising is a big reason why!

Many in Salt Lake City would jump with joy at the idea of their veteran signal caller coming back to lead the offense in ’25 after potentially competing for a conference title in the coming year.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to be in Rising’s plans.

Rising says he’s been in college long enough – though it hasn’t taken away from his fiery attitude and competitive spirit.

“I just wanna go down there and whip their a–, ” he was heard saying when speaking on a future matchup with rival BYU, a school that’s now become a league foe through conference realignment.

He hopes to escape with a rivalry win and more this year, as another return to Utah appears to be off the table!
