University of Utah quarterback Cam Rising has had an unfortunate past with injuries. The now-seventh year passer suffered yet another setback in his most recent outing vs. Arizona State.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham attempted to provide a timeline on his signal caller’s potential return on Monday, though his status remains indefinite.

Rising has played in three games this season, meaning a redshirt season remains on the table should he not take another snap.
That would offer a scenario where the quarterback returns for an eighth season of college football.
A timeline:
- Signed with Texas in 2018 class – redshirt
- Transferred to Utah in 2019 – redshirt
- Played one game before suffering season-ending injury in 2020 – medical redshirt
- Played 13 games in 2021
- Played 13 games in 2022, suffered ACL injury in bowl game
- Redshirt in 2023 while recovering from previous setback
- Appeared in three games in 2024
Despite being in college for seven seasons, he’s only used two years of eligibility. Even before this most recent injury, an eighth year was on the table, which he was asked about at Big 12 Media Day.
“That’s not the plan,” Cam Rising said of a potential return. “Seven years is more than enough.”
He might have to rethink that option now that his 2024 season is in doubt. And should he redshirt this season, his 2025-26 eligibility could possibly roll over into 2026-27!
If Rising did shut it down now under a worst-case scenario, a medical redshirt might be in order. This would give him a possible ninth year of eligibility.
We’ve seen players petition for a ninth college football season in the past. Could Cam Rising be the next?
Making a few more NIL bucks before hitting the real world might be enough to sway his decision!
