The Arizona State Sun Devils fell in College Football Playoff action to Texas on New Year’s Day. That matchup saw the Longhorns jump out to a big lead before holding off a furious Arizona State comeback attempt.
The Sun Devils forced overtime after overcoming a 16-point deficit in the final eight minutes of regulation. Running back Cam Skattebo credited a midgame puke and rally with changing the momentum in the game.
In the fourth quarter of play, Arizona State trailed 24-8. Hope appeared lost as the Texas defensive unit stymied Skattebo and Co. over the first 50 minutes of action. Then, the Sun Devils showed signs of life.
The offense scored two touchdowns in a matter of minutes. They converted twice on two-point attempts to tie the score. Their star running back was a big reason why!
Cam Skattebo threw a touchdown, ran for another, and found the endzone on one of those two-pointers. He had a hand in scoring 14 of those final 16 points, not to mention hauling in a 62-yard bomb to set up the game-tying score.

The success continued into overtime where he scored his second rushing touchdown of the day to put his team up for the first time since grabbing a 3-0 lead on the opening drive. You wouldn’t have expected the late outburst had you seen him on the sidelines moments before that explosion.
Cameras panned to Skattebo sitting on the bench while watching Texas continue to build its fourth quarter lead. He was “vomiting profusely” while looking completely gassed.

He credited that puke and rally for sparking his incredible late game performance. It was the first time he’d felt like himself!
“I think I was drinking a little too much Powerade and water,” he said on the Dan Patrick Show Thursday. “At the same time, I think I ate something bad in the morning. I had a croissant sandwich, and I don’t think it went down very well.
“I wasn’t feeling good leading up to the game, until I threw up… I felt like a completely different person. After that, the game switched for me.”

Cam Skattebo finished the game with 143 rushing yards and 99 receiving yards. Both led the team. He also threw a touchdown. Much of that damage was done in the fourth quarter. Now we know why.
