In the summer of 2022, Cam Smith was on top of the golf world. The Australian superstar won his first major at the British Open and climbed up to No. 2 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Then Smith bolted from the PGA Tour to join the upstart LIV Golf league, and things have never been the same since. Now, a new stat following the 2025 British Open shows just how far Smith’s golf career has fallen.

Cam Smith’s Brutal Run In Major Championships Validates Reason For Joining LIV

In the same year Smith won the British Open, he also finished third at the Masters and in a tie for 13th at the PGA Championship. Fast for a few years, and Smith was the only golfer to qualify for all four major championships and miss the cut at each one, according to Fried Egg Golf.

Smith shot rounds of 72 and 78 at Royal Portrush to finish at 8-over and miss the cut by seven strokes.

In an interview last year, Smith stated that a big part of the reason he joined LIV Golf was that he wanted to spend more time in his native Australia.

“That’s something that I’ve always done but something that also sacrificed my career on the PGA Tour, taking a couple of events off where I could have been in the US,” he stated. “Golf in Australia is something that’s always been near and dear to me. So to be able to support them, support the juniors a bit, get back down there, play one more time in Adelaide, all that stuff was just adding up and I couldn’t miss out on that opportunity.”

Now, we’re sure the rumored $100 million up-front payment didn’t hurt. But the good news is, now that Smith isn’t playing the weekend in majors, he has more time to spend at home.
