Golf can be a very frustrating game, and anyone that has ever picked up a club can attest to that.  PGA star Cam Young was reminded of that and lost his emotions at the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Cam Young came to the tee box on the 14th hole just one shot back of the lead held by Akshay Bhatia with an opportunity to cut into that at the Par 5. Instead, he hit a pulled into the rough, and he had enough of his driver.

Take a look at what happened.

That’s one of the least pleasant sounds I’ve heard in a while, to be honest. That’s a disgusting “crunch”.

If you’re wondering if Cam Young could have someone from his team get him a new driver, the answer is no. Here is the rule, according to the USGA.

  • A player is allowed to keep using and/or to repair any club damaged during the round, no matter what the damage and even if the player damaged it in anger.
  • A player is not allowed to replace a damaged club, except when it is damaged during the round by an outside influence or natural forces, or by someone other than the player or his or her caddie.

For instance, had a strong gust of wind somehow snapped his club in half, that could be replaced. But, anger is not an outside influence or natural force.

That meant that Cam  Young was forced to play the rest of his round without a driver, and it didn’t go well.  He played the final five holes in +2, and faded out of contention.

He picked a great way to ruin what was a really good week of golf for one of the best players on tour that doesn’t have a win yet.
