Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi, who reached reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2018, losing to Serena Williams, has mysteriously retired without warning or any communication.

Giorgi, who also achieved a career-high world tennis ranking of 26th in 2018, won four WTA singles titles including the 2021 Canadian Open, last competed in the Miami Open on March 23rd.

Since then, Express reports, the WTA has been unable to contact her or her family. Phone numbers belonging to Giorgi, her father Sergio and her brothers Leandro and Amadeus were disconnected when the WTA reached out.

“There’s a bit of concern,” Tathiana Garbin told ANSA. “The last time we spoke was before the Billie Jean King Cup and she didn’t give me availability to come to Seville with the team due to a foot problem,” adding, “I hope that she is well, that there are no problems and that she has left this sport that has given her so much with serenity.”

While she has not officially announced her retirement, Camila Giorgi is now listed on the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) website as “retired.”

The only communication the 32-year-old has had recently was a selfie with no caption that was posted to her Instagram Story on Tuesday, May 7.

According to Marca, Giorgi will now be focusing on fashion and her more than 730,000 Instagram followers.

The tennis star had previously stated, “Fashion has always been my great passion. I like sports a lot, but I like fashion more. An obsession that has been passed on to me since I was a child.

“There is no need to justify anything, I would like to say; I am dealing with a professional photographer who knows how to do his job. I like everything and it gratifies me.

“My mom always tells me as long as you can show your body take advantage because afterwards you can’t do it!”

Giorgi was considered to be one of the hardest hitters in the WTA, but was considered an “outsider” on the tour, admitting she “doesn’t follow tennis” during an interview at Wimbledon in 2018.

She also came under scrutiny in 2022 because of accusations that she used a fake vaccination certificate to gain entry into the Australian Open.

Giorgi ended up competing, losing to top seed and eventual champion, Ash Barty, in the third round and returning to the top 30 in the world rankings.
