Virginia Tech women’s basketball star Carleigh Wenzel is with the team as it returns to campus from Christmas break. The guard confirmed her presence in Blacksburg this week on social media.
She was forced to do so after rumors of her quitting on the Hokies surfaced online. She effectively dispelled the claims surrounding her future.
Wenzel was the heart and soul of last year’s 19-win squad, leading the team in both scoring and assists. She’s picked up where she left off in 2025 to lead Virginia Tech to an 11-3 start.
The guard is averaging 12.8 points per night to go along with 3.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists across 14 starts. She hopes her production continues into ACC play.
Virginia Tech women’s basketball is at full strength.
Wenzel confirmed as much on X Sunday morning. No one is missing from the team with the second half of the season approaching, despite what is floating around social media.
Over the weekend, women’s basketball account @SkimMilkey posted the following message.
“Our starting PG went home at Christmas and she never came back.”
Not ideal but sums up the 2025 NCAAW season well so far…

The account further clarified the initial tweet in a response to a follower. The poster claims to have gotten a text from a coach that “verbatim said ‘Hasn’t replied and didn’t come back on Friday.'”
No team was mentioned by the account. Speculation quickly spread as to who it could be. Wenzel’s name was brought up.
Carleigh Wenzel denied accusations that she quit on the Hokies.
everyone is back at VT including myself 🙂 GO HOKIES ! See y’all Thursday 💅🏼

The guard is on campus. She will play in the team’s next game vs. Miami on New Year’s Day. She is not the player referenced by @SkimMilkey.
A midseason exit would’ve been a shock given Virginia Tech’s start, as well as Wenzel’s place in the lineup. It would not be unheard of in the world of college sports.
East Carolina running back London Montgomery recently bailed on his team ahead of a bowl game win over Pitt. He reportedly never returned to campus after Christmas break. He will transfer to a new school this offseason.
That will not be the case for Carleigh Wenzel. She has no intentions to leave Virginia Tech. She is back on campus working to lead the Hokies to the NCAA Tournament.
