Carson Beck will not be the starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2025. The passer, who’s already declared for the NFL Draft, announced a backup plan on Thursday.

Beck has entered the transfer portal as his professional stock continues to tumble. Once viewed as a first-round lock, his latest grades show a substantial dip.

Beck struggled with consistency in his second season as the starter after leading the Bulldogs to a 13-1 campaign in 2023. The signal caller paced the SEC in passing a year ago, but he threw a league-worst 12 interceptions in ’24.

The latest CBS draft projections show him as the No. 5 passer in the current class. That ranks behind Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe, and Quinn Ewers. Most peg him to land somewhere in the second or third round should he choose to enter the NFL Draft.

Draft guru Todd McShay spoke on his initial decision to go pro after the fact. He believed it was mistake.

“Carson Beck made a bad decision to leave early. I texted a bunch of guys in the league… One scout wrote back to me a one-word answer, ‘foolish…’ The bottom line is there is time out, there is surgery, there is rehab, there is also body of work.

“He played great in certain moments. I thought he played better late in the season… But he never this year played to the level that many of us expected him to play.”

Beck was injured in an SEC Championship win over Texas, with elbow surgery officially ending his season. Sophomore Gunner Stockton took over following the injury, and it looks like the starting job will now be his to lose.

Carson Beck announced his plan to enter the transfer portal on Thursday. That news was made public in a post on social media.

The belief is that Beck will now reverse course on his NFL Draft decision to look for a new home at the college level for one final season. He’s likely to land plenty of interest from potential suitors. Ohio State, Texas Tech, and Miami are reportedly three early schools to watch in his pending recruitment.

Interestingly enough, Carson Beck’s girlfriend, Hanna Cavinder, is currently a member of the Miami women’s basketball team. She is in her final season of eligibility. The Hurricanes seem to have the inside track according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.

“Miami would loom as the favorite for Carson Beck. They, right now, don’t have an incumbent starter. Mario Cristobal has shown an affinity from the success that Cam Ward has had to have an established guy come in… If you’re handicapping where he could go, that would certainly be one of the options.”

Across the last two seasons in Athens, Beck has totaled 7,426 passing yards, 52 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions. His latest NIL valuation on On3 Sports sits at $4.2 million. That number ranked sixth among all NCAA athletes this past season.

Beck is likely to spurn a professional payday in order to cash in on one final collegiate season. Where he’ll play is still to be determined. The asking price for his return to the NCAA won’t be low. It will be an interesting storyline to follow this offseason.
