Steve Kerr was unexpectedly sidelined for Game 4 of the Warriors’ playoff series with Memphis after testing positive for COVID.

In his absence, Golden State called upon assistant coach Mike Brown to fill in. Brown, who was recently named head coach of the Sacramento Kings, is getting a crash course in the lead role.

It’s not the first time that Brown has been a head coach, but it has been a while. He led the Cavaliers to an Easter Conference title in the 2006-07 campaign. He also coached in Los Angeles before heading back to an assistant role with Golden State.

It appeared that Game 4 would be a great opportunity for the soon-to-be Sacramento leader to scratch out a playoff win.

The Grizzlies were without superstar Ja Morant, leading Golden State to being a 10-point favorite ahead of the opening tip.

But things didn’t go as smoothly as Brown and the Warriors would’ve hoped.

Memphis jumped out to an early lead, never trailing in the first half of play. The Grizzlies took a three-point lead into the halftime break, and they led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Things were looking bleak for the Warriors on their home court.

That first half performance had the NBA on TNT crew joking that Brown might have his coaching gig revoked if he lost to Memphis.

Charles Barkley jokes Mike Brown might be fired if he loses to the Grizzlies

Charles Barkley jokingly said, “If Mike Brown loses this game, he’s going to get fired by the Sacramento Kings.”

Harsh. Fired before coaching a game with his new organization.

All jokes aside, it was an iffy performance by the Warriors. They didn’t take their first lead until there were 45 seconds left in the game. Luckily, Golden State left with a 101-98 victory to move to 3-1 in the series, and a step closer to a conference finals appearance.

It looks like Brown is keeping his job after all.
