Charles Huff made the surprising decision to leave Marshall for the same job at Southern Miss after just four seasons in West Virginia. Although it looks like a lateral or lesser move on the surface, the Thundering Herd essentially squeezed him out by failing to meet the necessary financial commitment to its college football team, unlike the Golden Eagles.
Regardless of how things end up playing out over the next however many days, weeks, months and years, Huff has the exact same vision for his new team. He got caught reusing material from 2021 during his latest introductory speech on Thursday.
To be fair to Huff, there are only so many things you can say during your first day on a new job. Especially as a coach, where the vernacular has become more alike than different. And it’s not like the 41-year-old was going to present a different plan for the future when his plan is the same. It’s not a big deal.
With that being said, Huff completely plagiarized his former self during his first press conference in Hattiesburg. He guaranteed that other programs across college football will fear Southern Miss.
People will stop scheduling Southern Miss— period.
— Charles Huff
If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is. Huff also said that schools were going to stop scheduling Marshall during his first address to the Thundering Herd in 2021. He ran it back.
Knew this line sounded familiar 😭 https://t.co/BmmWS2vlhQ pic.twitter.com/TbAkSaV3UR
— Old Row Marshall (@OldRowHerd) December 12, 2024Charles Huff delivered on his promise last time. He went into South Bend and beat Notre Dame in 2022. Marshall went 10-3 and won the Sun Belt in 2024.
Can Charles Huff do it again?
Southern Miss is terrible. The Golden Eagles went 1-11 this year. They have just one winning season in the last five. It is a tall task to rebuild a basement-dweller in the Sun Belt but the university is committed to success. It is willing to spend the money Charles Huff needs to win. Marshall was not!
