Only one team in the Super Bowl era in NFL history has gone undefeated and won the Super Bowl, the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Every year, the surviving members of the team pop champagne when the last undefeated team in the NFL loses, ensuring they will still be the only undefeated team.

This year, the last undefeated team is the Kansas City Chiefs, who came into Sunday’s game against the Broncos having won 14 games in a row. It looked like the champagne was going to be popped on Sunday, but a crazy finish meant the champagne returned to the refrigerator.

The Kansas City Chiefs continued their red zone struggles, setting for four field goals against two Denver Broncos touchdowns to lead 16-14 late in their divisional matchup on Sunday. Bo Nix led the Broncos down the field in the two-minute drill. When he completed a third-down pass to Courtland Sutton in field goal range with the Chiefs out of timeouts, it appeared the Chiefs would finally lose.

Then, this happened. Take a look.

Standout Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal somehow got a piece of the kick, and the Chiefs moved to 9-0. It’s just another in a long line of close wins for Kansas City this year. It’s their seventh win by a touchdown or less this year. Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and company continue to be the best situational football team in the league.

Now, Bob Griese, Mercury Morris, and Larry Csonka will have to keep the champagne on ice for at least another week.
