Donovan Mitchell has been a star for the Utah Jazz this season.
On the year, ‘Spida’ is averaging 26 points per game while dishing out 5.4 assists. The dynamic guard is the team’s focal point, and he’s been able to lead the Jazz to a fifth place standing in the Western Conference playoff race.
On Tuesday, though, he made headlines for making a boneheaded mistake in a close loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.
With Utah trailing by four late in the fourth quarter, Mitchell attempted to inbound the ball underneath his own basket. After going through his progressions and finding no one open, Spida turned to the referee and called timeout.
The issue?
Utah was out of timeouts. The result was a technical foul, which gave the Clippers the ball and effectively sealed the game. Los Angeles left with a 121-115 victory after trailing by as many as 25 points in the second half.

While Mitchell scored a team-high 33 points in the loss, his late blunder is what was remembered. It also brought about the name of one retired NBA star.
Chris Webber Trending On Twitter After Donovan Mitchell Play
Former basketball star Chris Webber was trending on social media after Mitchell’s mistake.
For those who don’t know, the former Michigan Wolverine did this exact thing in his college career. The only difference was that Webber did it in a national title game as opposed to the regular season.
Folks that saw Mitchell’s boneheaded play immediately thought of Webber, and the Twitter reaction took off.

Luckily, Mitchell’s mistake won’t be talked about to the extent that Webber’s was, and still is.
