Grimsby Town Keeper Who Helped Deliver Historic Win Over Manchester United Says He’s Actually Annoyed Because He’s A Utd Fan

There seems to be no bottom for Manchester United right now, who keep finding new ways to embarrass themselves. Their latest face-plant might be the club’s most brutal yet, as they lost to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday — the team’s FIRST EVER loss to a fourth-tier club.

First, a quick breakdown of the English football pyramid for the uninformed. Manchester United are in the first tier, the Premier League. While they’ve been largely rudderless for a decade now, they’re still one of the most iconic, and therefore richest, soccer teams in the world.

Under the Premier League is the second tier, the Championship, which is where Ryan Reynolds/Rob Mac’s Wrexham and Tom Brady’s Birmingham City currently play. That’s followed by the third tier, League One, and then the fourth tier, League Two — and THAT is where Grimsby Town currently play.

Just to put how low the fourth tier of English football is, when Reynolds and Mac purchased Wrexham in 2021, they were in the fifth tier.

Nevertheless, despite playing in League Two, Grimsby went toe-to-toe with Man U, as they raced out to a 2-0 lead before eventually overcoming them in penalties.

Grimsby Town keeper Christy Pym says he’s “half fuming” after beating Manchester United

A key hero in the win was keeper Christy Pym, who not only saved Matheus Cunha’s penalty during the shootout but also scored one himself. Pym, however, wasn’t 100% elated after the match, though, as he admitted to being a bit annoyed as he’s a Manchester United fan himself.

“Yeah it’s not sunk in yet [the win]. I’m a Man United fan so I’m half fuming a little bit,” Pym told the media after the match. “Nights like this are what you play football for.”
