Chubba Purdy, the little brother of Brock Purdy, might be the worst quarterback in college football. He has not quite lived up to his billing as a four-star recruit.

The sixth-year senior was benched in favor of a true freshman on Saturday and will likely spend the rest of his final season as the backup.

This kind of thing is not uncommon in college football, where a top prospect doesn’t pan out. However, the modern era of collegiate athletics allows athletes to make a decent chunk of money while trying to figure it out so it could be a lot worse.

Chubba Purdy is the little brother of Brock Purdy.

Chubba sat behind Brock during his first two seasons of high school football at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona. He eventually took over as the successor to big bro as a junior and threw for 3,425 yards and 36 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,152 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns. Perry went 11-3 en route to the state championship game. It eventually loss to Chandler.

As a senior in 2019, Purdy tallied 4,423 yards of total offense with 52 touchdowns and was named as the Offensive Player of the Year in Arizona. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound signal-caller ranked as a four-star recruit.

Purdy initially committed to play college football at Louisville. He later flipped his commitment to Florida State in December.

Ironically, Purdy actually made his collegiate debut against Louisville. The true freshman quarterback completed only 27 of his 53 pass attempts for 219 yards and two touchdowns with an interception before a broken collarbone ended his first season.

As a redshirt freshman in 2021, Purdy’s only appearance was in a blowout win over UMass. He completed five of his pass attempts for 98 yards and two touchdown passes. But that was it.

Purdy hit the portal in November and transferred to Nebraska in January. That didn’t go well either.

His completion percentage hovered right around 50% during his two years in Lincoln with four more interceptions than touchdowns. And then it was back to the portal!

Nevada benched him for a true freshman.

Chubba Purdy transferred to the University of Nevada as a fifth-year senior. The Wolfpack went with incumbent starter Brendon Lewis in 2024 so his backup attempted only 25 passes all season. He threw one touchdown and one interception.

Lewis ultimately transferred to Memphis during the offseason, which thrust Purdy into the role of QB1.

Unfortunately, that too was a disappointment. Nevada lost to Penn State, Western Kentucky, Fresno State and a horrible Middle Tennessee State team and barely escaped with a win over Sacramento State.

Purdy’s stat lines are less than ideal.

  • at Penn State: 7-of-15, 97 yards, one interception
  • vs. Sacramento State: 12-of-21, 144 yards, two interceptions
  • vs. MTSU: 5-of-7, 88 yards, one touchdown, one interception
  • at Western Kentucky: 16-of-30, 165 yards, two interceptions
  • at Fresno State: 0-of-4, 0 yards, two interceptions

The Wolfpack benched Chubba Purdy for true freshman Carter Jones in the loss to the Bulldogs. Jones is going to make his first start on Saturday.

Needless to say, the four-star younger brother of Brock Purdy has not lived up to the initial expectations. He actually might be the worst quarterback in college football this season, statistically speaking.
