LSU wide receiver CJ Daniels is (going to be) back in the college football transfer portal for the second time in less than 12 months. He will be a sixth-year senior at his next stop with one year of eligibility remaining.

The former two-star recruit got paid a small fortune through Name, Image and Likeness to spend less than 11 months in Baton Rouge and is likely going to receive just as much money, if not more, at his third different program.

Daniels began his college football career at Liberty University. His other scholarship offers out of high school included North Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Stetson and the service academies. That was it!

However, in the modern era of the sport, there is unprecedented levels of opportunity for an under-recruited player to prove his worth on the Group of Five/Six level and transfer up. Daniels did exactly that. The 6-foot-2 pass-catcher went for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns on 55 receptions during the 2023 season. The Flames played in a New Year’s Six bowl in large part because of his performance.

Daniels was in high demand as a result of his strong fourth year. He hit the transfer portal and ultimately ended up playing for LSU.

Jamey Chadwell made it abundantly clear that his program was unable to compete with the financial offers presented to the star wide receiver. Liberty’s head coach said Daniels received an NIL package that sat comfortably in the six-figure range from the boosters on the Bayou.

LSU paid for a car and an apartment and like $300,000. What do you do?

Now, less than a year and 42 catches later, the former Flames star is back in the portal— or will be soon.

Brian Kelly said just last week that he was “excited about having [Daniels] with us,” because “all indications are he’s gonna be back next year.” Daniels said something similar.

Right now, I’m very firm on coming back. I think it would be best for me. Just improving my draft stock and just getting to where I want to be. I think it would definitely be a smart decision.

Something must’ve changed because is no longer the case. Awkward!

Is this a negotiating tactic? Did LSU get out-bid? We don’t know but, depending on where he ends up, we might be able to read between the lines. It is possible that CJ Daniels simply had enough of Kelly. It is also possible that he received an offer he cannot refuse and the Tigers chose not to match.
