Kenny Brooks decided to motivate Clara Strack by tearing her down. Believe it or not, the biggest star on the women’s college basketball team at Kentucky responded well to the head coach’s criticism.
She played two of her best games of the season during the first two rounds of the SEC Tournament.
The college basketball fans who were offended by Brooks’ comments were forced to eat their words. They are not familiar with the relationship between player and coach.
Who is Clara Strack?
There may not be a better a better overall player in women’s college basketball this season. Strack may not lead the nation in scoring or rebounds but she averages a high-scoring double-double every time she steps out onto the court and makes 47.8% of her attempts from the field.
Kentucky would not be ranked No. 17 in the country without its 6-foot-5 center. She is the leading scorer and rebounder with an average of 16.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
The former four-star recruit began her career with Kenny Brooks at Virginia Tech. Clara Strack ultimately followed her head coach to Lexington prior to last season and immediately took the Wildcats back to the NCAA Tournament after two-straight years with only 12 wins. They are a legitimate national title contender again this season contender at 22-9. They also have a chance to win the SEC if they get hot.
All of this goes to say that Kentucky is very good. It would not be this good without its best player!
Strack will likely be drafted into the WNBA with a top-10 pick in 2027 if this trajectory continues but there is still a long way to go between now and next May. One game at a time.
Kentucky women’s basketball coach Kenny Brooks did not hold back on his star player.
Despite all of her success during the regular season, Strack was inconsistent down the stretch. Kentucky lost to unranked Mississippi State, No. 17 Tennessee, No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 4 Texas on the road, as well as unranked Georgia, No. 3 South Carolina and No. 7 Vanderbilt at home in seven of its last 12 games. Its best player did not play up to her standard.
Strack either failed to get hers on offense or struggled on the glass.
- @ Mississippi State — 10 points, 15 rebounds
- @ Tennessee — 9 points, 15 rebounds
- vs. Georgia — 9 points, 8 rebounds
- vs. Vanderbilt — 14 points, 15 rebounds
- at Texas — 14 points, 7 rebounds
- at Vanderbilt — 17 points, 7 rebounds
- vs. South Carolina — 24 points, 9 rebounds
The Wildcats need their big to play her best basketball over the next few weeks. They will not make a run in the postseason if she does not lead the way on both ends of the court.
With that in mind, head coach Kenny Brooks gave her some words of encouragement prior to the SEC Tournament. Rather, he did the opposite.
He brutally tore her down and told her she was “the worst superstar he’s ever coached.” Harsh words!

What an example of a great coach and a great player being coachable. pic.twitter.com/vV7IGakvi8
As you could imagine, a lot of college basketball casuals were astonished that a coach would ever say such a thing to any of his players — let alone his best player. That was mean! He made her cry!
Well, it worked.
Clara Strack bounced right back from her slump to score 20 points with 13 rebounds during a 20-point win over Arkansas on Wednesday and 33 points with eight rebounds during a 15-point win over Georgia on Thursday. She was unstoppable.

Strack did not take Brooks’ words as a cruel insult. They have a special bond. It’s okay.

There you have it! Nothing more needs to be said about the motivational comments.
I would be lying if I said I was not surprised to hear Kenny Brooks refer to Clara Strack as the worst superstar he has ever coached. But she did not take offense so so do I and neither should you.
