Clay Helton took the high road on Monday after the sudden and mysterious departure of defensive lineman Isaac Walker. However, in doing so, he threw some not-so-subtle shade at the former Georgia Southern star, who will now finish out his college football career at a different program.

The 52-year-old head coach made it abundantly clear that it is not his job to make everyone happy!

This bizarre sequence of events actually began during the bye week when backup quarterback Dexter Williams decided to hit the transfer portal. He was one of the higher-paid players through NIL and was in position to take over as the starter next season after leading an epic comeback against Marshall last month. Nobody expected him to bounce but the circumstances at least made some sense.

The same cannot be said for Walker. There is no clear answer as to what went wrong.

A video captured his visible frustration with the coaching staff and/or his teammates during the closing moments of a disappointing loss to Troy on Saturday.

Not long after the game, Walker posted a cryptic message on his Instagram story.

To all da fans that came out, I apologize.

All I wanted to do was win a championship at Georgia Southern but that ain’t a common goal within the building.

Less than 24 hours later, the preseason All-Sun Belt selection was no long listed on the Eagles’ roster. He decided to leave the team (or was encouraged to do so) and went out with a bang. Walker shared a cryptic essay about his time in Statesboro, which only added to the confusion. It did not indicate an exact reason for the sudden departure but it did hint at some internal, behind-the-scenes drama.

Clay Helton doesn’t see it that way.

Helton pushed back on Walker’s diatribe during his brief discussion of the unfortunate roster move. He reaffirmed his commitment to winning the conference, as well as the commitment of his 123 other players— which directly went against the departing player’s account.

We may never know what really went down in Statesboro between three-year starter Isaac Walker and Georgia Southern’s football program. It sounds like the former might deserve more blame than he let on.

Either way, his departure is a big loss for an Eagles team that currently sits second in the Sun Belt standings with just two games to go!
