Cleveland Browns Awkwardly Celebrated A Play That Ultimately Cost Them A Win Over The Giants

Cleveland Browns Celebration

The Cleveland Browns lost to the New York Giants on Sunday to drop to 1-2. They totaled less than 250 yards on offense and allowed nearly 350 yards on defense.

It might’ve been a different result if not for a roughing the passer call in the first quarter that led to the most awkward big-play celebration of the season.

Daniel Jones threw a short pass to his left that was intended for tight end Theo Johnson. However, he zipped it right into the gut of defensive back Ronnie Hickman instead. His throw was completely off the mark and resulted in an easy interception.

The entire defense took the opportunity to celebrate. Not just Hickman. They ran straight to the end zone for a choreographed mock drum line of sorts.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah led one of the most fun celebrations of the year that ended up being a rather embarrassing blunder. A flag was down on the field as the Browns danced together in the end zone.

Officials determined that Greg Newsome roughed the passer shortly after Jones released the would-be pick. You can say the call was soft, sure, but it was absolutely correct. Cleveland’s defensive back had every opportunity to hit New York’s quarterback from the neck-down and went helmet-to-helmet instead. Textbook roughing penalty.

The Giants got a fresh set of downs as a result of the flag. They went 81 yards on 12 plays for six (seven with the PAT) points and tied the game at 7. They won the game 21-15.

Although one play never (rarely) determines the outcome of a singular win or loss, that roughing the passer penalty ultimately proved to be the difference. An interception that would’ve changed the entire momentum of the game was instead ruled as 15-yard penalty in favor of the offense.

Meanwhile, as multiple yellow flags laid on the ground, the Browns were in the end zone to celebrate a play that technically never happened. Awkward!
