We sat down with Punk to talk about Night Patrol, his love of horror movies, and his acting career.
How would you describe Night Patrol?
CM Punk: “This is a socially conscious action horror movie with an amazing cast.”
How did you get involved in this project?
“Fan of Ryan Prows. His movie prior to this one was called Low Life. I suggest people watch that one, too. That one’s a lot of fun. I’m a horror movie guy, too. I think that was the biggest thing. I jumped at the chance to get to play a vampire.”
“Ryan is somebody who I think is going to do a lot more great, great films in the future. So this is just his second. It might be the first that’s going to get a wide national release. And he has a specific vision. You can tell who his director heroes are. He sprinkles a little bit of flavor of a Tarantino and a Carpenter here and there. But then he also has his own focused vision. And to me, that’s what makes a brilliant artist in any respect to it, whether it’s a film director, whether it’s a pro-wrestler, whether it’s a musician. You’re carving your own path, you’re doing your own thing, but you’re also paying homage to the people that have inspired you.”
What was it like working with Justin Long?
“Absolutely tremendous, especially considering that Justin jumped on this project at the very last minute. There were scheduling conflicts with an actor who was originally to play the role that he played. And when he came on, I feel like it was an upgrade. Justin Long is our lovely Scream King. So he’s going to bring a lot of eyeballs to this.
“He also just brought such depth to this movie. He absolutely jumped in with both feet first, just choose up the screen when he’s on there. He absolutely nailed this role, and I was super impressed, and I’m grateful he was there. Getting to work with him was amazing because it was fun, it was relaxed, but it was also serious business, and I learned a lot, too.”
You also worked with YG and Freddie Gibbs for this movie. What was the experience like?
“I loved it so much just because we are the misfits of our various different professions. You got pro-wrestlers, rappers, athletes, artists, musicians, everything converging, really give the cast in this movie a richness and a depth. I loved working with Y.G., I love just talking to Freddie Gibbs in between scenes and stuff like that. He’s great, too. Just a lot of fun people to play with.”

You say you’re a horror movie fan, what are your favorite types of horror films?
“I like all kinds, honestly. It’s probably easier to get me to explain what horror movies I don’t like. I think we beat the paranormal thing to death at this point. Found-footage movies aren’t super in my rotation either. But horror is a genre that has always spoken to me ever since I was a little kid. It may be attracted to the fear that it generates or the gore or whatever. But growing up realizing that horror ever since Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is something that speaks on social issues. So horror is always, to me, been on the cutting edge of that, and that feels like a good place to be able to tell stories and to actually speak about real-world social situations.”
“My top horror movie of all time? That’s easy. It’s Carpenter’s Halloween, number one with a bullet. I mean, that thing just is a supernatural force within itself.”

Do you plan to act more often in the future?
“I like to do fun stuff with cool people. It doesn’t matter what it is. It could be going to a coffee shop. I’m fortunate to be in a situation where people are putting me in movies and they’re actually paying me. Don’t tell anybody. I probably do a lot of this stuff for free. It’s fun. This movie in particular felt like I was making a film with a bunch of friends of mine. So that’s always a good experience. When you can go to work and it doesn’t feel like work, you know you’re in the right spot.”
Night Patrol is set to release nation-wide on Friday, January 16th.
