Mike Krzyzewski, better known as Coach K, resigned from his role at Duke following the 2021-21 college basketball season. And yet he was still presented with the box score during every media timeout while sitting courtside at the Vegas Showdown on Tuesday night.
The seemingly preferential treatment for someone who is supposedly retired drew a lot of criticism from fans watching at home but a prominent voice within the sport is pushing back on the negativity.
Coach K is a legend. There is no way to deny his greatness as a five-time national champion who reached 13 Final Fours. However, he was widely disliked by nature of his role with the Blue Devils, his on-court demeanor and success that bred resentment.
To add to the hatred, the three-time Naismith Coach of the Year said after his final game that it was “not about him” even though there was a full ceremony to honor him during pregame after a year-long retirement tour at every road game through his final season. Krzyzewski also continues to sit directly behind the team bench whenever he attends a game as a “fan.” But it’s not about him… right??
Coach K is still hanging around the team!
With that in mind, college basketball fans were quick to manufacture outrage surrounding Coach K during Duke’s loss to Kansas in the Terry’s Chocolate Vegas Showdown. He was hand-delivered a box score by the program’s Sports Information Director during every stoppage of play.
There is no way Coach K is having stats delivered to him at every media timeout

The haters questioned why a retired coach need the box score when it’s not about him. The answer is pretty simple.
First and foremost, it’s very easy to just print out an extra paper and hand it to him. Secondly, this is fairly standard practice. People involved with a program, both past and present, like having the box score.
The grandson of former UConn head coach Jim Calhoun cleared things up.
This is normal. Bob Hurley Sr. and my grandfather receive box scores at every timeout

There are a lot of reasons to dislike Mike Krzyzewski. Him getting the box score during timeouts is not one.
