College baseball is officially back and Mississippi State picked right up where it left off— winning. Manhattan traveled down to Starkville on Friday for the first of three games this weekend.
Not only did the Jaspers lose in blowout fashion, their left fielder got obliterated in a scene straight out of a cartoon.
Mississippi State, for those who don’t know, is one of the premier programs in college baseball. The Bulldogs won a national title as recently as 2021 and qualified for a Regional in 10 of the last 13 years. This year’s team is ranked as high as No. 15 in the various preseason rankings. It has Omaha potential!
As is the case in most sports, elite college baseball teams typically begin the season with an inferior non-conference opponent if they are not participating in one of the many Opening Weekend tournaments. Mississippi State welcomed Manhattan to The Dude. The Jaspers went 22-30 last year and 10-14 in the MAAC.
They began the new season at 0-1 by a score of 17-3. Manhattan scored its only runs of the game during the late innings against Mississippi State’s least experienced arms.

Senior utilityman Aaron Downs got in the game during the fourth inning. The Bulldogs were already up 14-0 when he stepped into the box on a 0-1 count with runners on second and third.
He put them up 17-0 with his first-career dinger! It traveled 368 feet with an exit velocity of 98 miles per hour. However, it did not look like a guaranteed home run off of the bat.
Jaspers left fielder Dylan Mayer chased the fly ball all of the way to the warning track and into the wall. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound sophomore lost his hat during the violent collision.
3-run bomb for Aaron Downs!

To be fair, Mayer is listed on the roster as an infielder and a pitcher. Left field is not his natural position so he didn’t adjust to the wall and got absolutely crushed!
