The college baseball game between Mercer and Samford took much longer than expected because of an unexpected and awkward protest in response to an excessive home run celebration. It was intense!
One of the mothers in the crowd was escorted out of the stadium by police during the bizarre sequence of events.
This unusual college baseball incident took place when Michael Gupton hit a two-run home run to dead center field during the sixth inning to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to four. The junior outfielder made sure to let the Bears know what just happened. He was overly animated as he ran around the bases and stopped to yell something at shortstop Bradley Frye as he turned around second and turned his body toward the opposing dugout while he made his way back to the plate.
That did not go over well with Mercer. Frye had to be held back by the umpires when he tried to follow Gupton toward third base in response to the animated celebration. The coaching staff was irate.
I have never seen what happened next. Head coach Craig Gibson literally removed his players from the field in protest to Gupton’s antics. They wanted him to be ejected. Multiple players had to be restrained in the dugout to prevent further escalation.
Southern Conference commissioner Michael Cross had to leave his seat to speak with the umpires and both head coaches to prevent further escalation. The Bears were livid. The Bulldogs were laughing.
Samford hits a bomb. Dude taunts the whole stadium. Mercer takes players off the field in protest.

Technically speaking, Mercer’s protest worked. However, it kind of backfired.
An umpire review led both Michael Gupton and Bradley Frye to be ejected. Mercer pitching coach Tanner Gordon was also removed from the game. As was Samford assistant Gil Walker.
Frye’s mother was furious with the decision and jumped on top of the dugout to express her frustration. She, too, was shown the door. An armed police officer escorted her out of the building.

That whole thing took approximately 25 minutes to figure out. And it was not the end of the shenanigans!
Mercer’s third baseman was later ejected for shoving a Samford player.

The Bears remained feisty throughout the rest of the evening. They did not stop running their mouths.

Samford ultimately won the game by a final score of 5-1 and will play for the SoCon title. Mercer’s season is over.
