The Lafayette baseball team was beaten soundly by Miami on Sunday to close a forgettable weekend in Coral Gables. The Leopards were swept in a four-game series.

The Hurricanes outscored their opponent 73-14 in the set. Lafayette was forced to endure nine innings of torture due to a cancelled flight in the finale.

Miami breezed through the first three games of the weekend with wins of 15-2, 14-4, and 14-3. Two of those contests were cut short by the mercy rule.

That mercy rule typically goes into effect when one team holds a 10-run lead after seven innings. It could’ve been implemented on Sunday, but travel adjustments kept the Leopards on the field for all nine frames.

Miami rewrote its baseball record books.

The Hurricanes erupted for 30 runs in the fourth and final game of the series. That included a record-setting fourth inning in which they belted five home runs.

Miami struck for five runs in the bottom of the first frame. They added 17 more across the next six innings to take a commanding 22-1 lead.

In a typical weekend, the mercy rule would be placed into effect to allow the road team a chance to get back to campus in a timely manner. Lafayette, however, had nowhere to go.

It snowed in Easton, Pennsylvania.

The Leopards’ return flight was cancelled due to the inclement weather. Rather than pack it in, they chose to finish out the contest.

Miami would score eight more runs over its last two at-bats to move the advantage to 30-1. Lafayette plated four runs in the top of the ninth to lose 30-5.

No pity was taken on the Leopards, though they likely could’ve ended the game early had they chosen to do so. With the team unable to travel home Sunday night, they played out the matchup in its entirety.

The Hurricanes racked up 25 hits while batting .510 as a team. They tied a school mark with nine homers. The 30-run outburst was one of the best offensive showings in program history.

Lafayette took it on the chin. They’ll return home on Monday to prep for a three-game set against William & Mary.

Miami moved to 9-0 on the season. They’ll hope to continue the momentum into a matchup with FAU.
