The College of Charleston basketball team beat CAA rival UNC Wilmington on the road Sunday night. The win could have major implications on the conference race.

The Cougars exploited a little-known rule in the final seconds to secure victory. That move came with risk, but it paid off with perfect execution.

Charleston travelled to Wilmington for the Seahawks‘ final home game. The Cougars played spoiler on Senior Night.

After falling behind by double digits in the first half, the road warriors used a 56-point second half explosion to pull the upset. The comeback was officially completed on the last possession.

Charleston exploited a basketball loophole.

UNCW led by eight at the 7-minute mark. The Cougars used a 9-1 run to tie the game over the next four minutes of play. They then took the lead and iced the game with free throws.

Charleston held a 77-76 advantage with 1.9 seconds remaining in regulation. They dug into their bag of tricks on the final inbound play.

According to the NCAA rulebook, the defending team cannot extend beyond the boundary line on an inbound play.

The opponents of the thrower-in shall not reach through the throw-in boundary-line plane and touch or dislodge the ball while it is in the possession of the thrower-in or is being passed to a teammate outside the boundary line as in Rule 7-4.6.b.

The receiver, however, is allowed to reach over the line so long as their feet are in-bounds. There are pros and cons of the strategy.

The obvious positive is that it provides a clear throwing lane. On Charleston’s first inbound attempt, the UNC Wilmington basketball team was given a delay of game warning for crossing the boundary to swat the pass.

The drawbacks, however, are notable.

Should the offensive player drop the pass, it more than likely lands out of bounds to award the opposing team possession with little time running from the clock. It also puts the receiver in a position to be quickly trapped with no exit.

With less than two seconds on the clock, the Cougars were not worried about the latter. Once the Charleston player gained possession, he was quickly fouled.

The Cougars sank both free throws. UNC Wilmington did not get a final shot to tie.

With the win, College of Charleston moved to 14-4 in CAA play. If the Seahawks lose their season finale to Elon, the two teams will share the regular season league title.

UNC Wilmington has clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament due to tiebreakers regardless of the outcome in the final game. They could very well see the Cougars again as they look to secure a March Madness bid.
